- one_strange_texExplorerOthers have covered the topic pretty well, but I will just say I-20 through Louisiana is no picnic, but it is better than I-10. I use some parallel state and US highways to avoid the rough roads and construction on I-10 from the Mississippi River into far East Texas when I take the southern route.

That is an unnecessary complication.
There is an "avoid highways" (meaning Interstates and freeways) option.......on almost all map software and GPS devices. - SongbirdsExplorerJust go to Maps Google and select Bicycle as that will avoid Highways.

Does this Atlas provide current road conditions, or local-knowledge?
Personally, I use GE and lots of online research :-)
Likely another case of over-thinking something that really is fairly simple.
If it is a major highway, the conditions last week may be entirely different now. And if it is REALLY bad, the nearby secondary roads might be clogged too.
It doesn't hurt to ask but it DOES waste time obsessing over it. - seagraceExplorerSorry, apparently I'm not allowed to post relevant content.
- lazyboyExplorerThanks for your suggestions.
- dalenoelExplorer III've taken I-10 on that trip two years ago and will never again do that. We are currently in Gulfport, MS and had a great trip over I-10 from Orange City, FL. Roads to this point have been very good. No construction.
This morning we will be taking US-49 N to Jackson, MS and then I-20 West to meet up with I-10 near Van Horn, TX. I have not taken it yet but have heard the road is better than I-10 and I know I-10 has construction in LA and west TX.
Good luck on the choice and if I remember I'll post results in a few days. - NMDriverExplorerGoogle Maps and under options click on avoid Highways.
- IvylogExplorer IIII was surprised how good I-10 and I-20 from Phoenix to Atlanta were a couple weeks ago. Very little construction and the new concrete roads are nice. Did Ft Worth/Dallas at midnight and 65 mph.

That's my normal plan of action too.
