Florida turnpike/Sun Pass

We are planning a trip to Jonathan Dickenson State Park, Hobe Sound,FL in a couple of weeks. We have two options to go (we will be driving our Ford F350 and towing our 5th wheel). We can take 75 to 10 to 95 or we can take 75 to the turnpike, which does look a shorter route. Does anyone have recommendations and also, would it benefit us to buy a Florida Sun Pass if we do indeed take the turnpike?
  • After your trip you can cancel your sunpass and they will refund you any money left on it.
  • Sun Pass is easy. Get the stick on one and, what you pay for it, it's credited on your bill, so you're really not paying a thing for it, plus you get the toll savings instead of paying full toll plus a service charge for paying with "toll by plate" or whatever it's called.

Turnpike is a nice road with less traffic than the 95.
  • Sun Pass will also give you up to a 25% discount on all tolls.. Also, from wait I understand, sections of the toll road no longer have attended booths, they take a picture of your tag and mail you a bill with a service charge.
  • 95 isn't all that bad above south Florida in my experience. We use the turnpike mostly to avoid the big metro area traffic further below Jonathan Dickinson area when we head to the Keys.

The Sunpass is worth having if you plan to come to Florida often for the small toll saving and the convenience of shooting through the faster lanes.

In some places, there are no longer toll booths, so cameras read your tags electronically and if you don't have Sunpass, they mail you a bill. Then you have to wonder when it will show up weeks later, and be around to pay the paper bill.

We have family in Florida and go often in car or RV, so use the system often. If this is likely to be a one shot trip, I wouldn't bother, though. You'll end up with leftover credits on your account.
  • I bought a Sun Pass because you do not have to wait at toll booths. savings was not that much.
