Hello all
The family and I are heading up to Colorado for Independence day Im looking for some route tips to help us along the way.
Our first destination is Colorado Springs so we can unhook and go see pikes peak and garden of the gods. But I want to stop and spend the night on the way there. Anyone have experience with this route that can recommend a good boondocking rest stop or truck stop along the way? Im thinking somewhere around the Texas New Mexico border.
EDIT**
woops, forgot to add that my plan is to take 287 to 87 to I25 then on up.
I'll just make a suggestion on your routing - think about sliding off I-25 in Walsenberg and heading up to Salida and Buena Vista, IMHO you will be much Happier with the fact that you are away from the foothills and the traffic and close to what I consider the Real Colorado - 14'ers - gravel roads - Arkansas River - Leadville - Independence Pass - Turquoise Lake - The real Colorado. (Not to mention Quincy's and K's for a meal)
If you still need to get to the Springs or Denver you can always catch them on the way home. IMHO the reason most people come to Colorado pretty much starts with the area around Buena Vista and towns like Ouray and Lake City so......... may as well get to them first and save the crowds for later.
Just a thought,
Just looked that route up on google earth, seems like an awesome way to go but my wife is looking forward to meeting up with her family so she shot it down lol.
One day when we have more time id love to explore the real colorado!
If not in a hurry to get home (only adds 3-4 hours of driving time) take the route home, it is truly a beautiful drive.
My wife is the same - get me to the Granddaughters NOW.
BUT we will still take the road Less Traveled on the way out.
