Will be passing through Denver tomorrow heading east. Trying to decide whether to take I-76 or I-70 after Denver. Thinking about picking up a US route instead of either interstate. Maybe I-76 to near Lincoln and then dropping down to either US 136 or US 36?
Other option is take I-70 until we enter KS and then cross over to US 36?
The last portion of the trip, I know I want to pick up US 24 in Illinois to take across Indiana.
Mainly my concern is to have nice roads instead of a lot of pot holes. Would welcome your suggestions. Thank you
This has been a good route out of - or into Denver. Use the I-to get me out of Colorado - roads have a habit of taking the winter hard - all the Way to Hannibal then once you get on the East side of the Mississippi you need to Stay on the I's or you just lose too much time. Rt 36 on the West side of the River tends to be Good and less traffic - Smooth - sailing.
Hope this is of some help,
^^^^^^ This. What Bill said.
I've done this route many times, to Ft Wayne area (actually to Stroh, IN). I've done the I-80 route and am not a fan, primarily due to the Chicagoland nightmare.
Take US 36 all the way across Kansas and Missouri. When you cross from Hannibal MO into IL, you'll be on I-72. Take that to the intersection of I-57 and take I-57 north at Champaign/Urbana. Stay on I-57 to the US 24 exit and take that east. It's 2 lane from IL into IN, becomes 4 lane at Logansport IN all the way to Fort Wayne. The 2 lane section has more than a few small towns to go through, but it's a fine drive, not unpleasant at all. In Logansport, US 24 joins up with US 35 around the south end of Logansport. Watch for US 24 to split off TO THE LEFT from US 35, which continues to the right. I nearly missed that turn one time and hard to turn around with a trailer! From Logansport to Fort Wayne is a good drive, the roadway was fine, and picking up I-69 in Fort Wayne was easy.
