Fresno, CA to Santa Cruz (Felton), CA

We're going to spend a couple of days at Santa Cruz Redwoods RV park this weekend coming over from Fresno, CA. I'm towing a 30ft. 5th wheel and am looking for an easy to get over to Felton, CA. Looks like there are several ways once you get on Hwy152 West so I'm looking for an ideal route. I'm a decent driver, but I prefer the safest route. My wife gets car sick on the turns so looking a way to get over there without upsetting the whole family.

  • Yes 129 is fine, I take it all the time. Big rigs use it as well.
  • Thanks Guys,

I definitely know to avoid 152 West from Gilroy. I agree that 152 to 156 to 1 would be the easiest though it is longer. Never took 129 before so you think that route would be ok ?
  • Taking 152 west from Gilroy into Watsonville is NOT advised for your rig; it's narrow and curvy and in several places, the trees are pretty close to the road's edge.

If you want to avoid going "over the hill" on 17, the simplest option is to take 101 south to 129 into Watsonville, then go north on 1; be aware that traffic is heavy on 1 (both directions) through the Capitola/Soquel/Santa Cruz areas. Have your route to Felton (on Hwy. 9) from 1 mapped out in advance by whoever is doing the navigating. I suggest checking Google earth for road layouts; with a 30' 5th wheel, there are not many opportunities for making fast lane switches or turning around.
  • 152 to 156 to 1 is the best route I think. This portion of one is not windy at all versus something like highway 17.
