The choice is a 'toss up'. If you go south on 87,
you will turn left/east at the gulf (sound) on 98 for about
a block, then right/south over a free bridge onto the
island. Then a quick right turn and a pretty ride along
the beach...45 mph limit, but no traffic, and an enjoyable
ride. This leads to a left turn in a business area, to
Fort Pickens. There is a sign.
If you continue on I 10 into Pensacola, you turn onto I 110
and follow that through the city until it ENDS. Then a
milti-lane highway, a left turn, onto a 3 mile long bridge
(do NOT run out of fuel). This ends in Gulf Breeze FL,
and after about a mile of traffic, turn at the sign (right/
south) to the island, across a toll ($1) bridge. After less
than a mile turn right at the sign to Fort Pickens.
Fort Pickens is down a 7 mile road with NOTHING on it. Take
in your food and drinks. There is no food store on the island.
You must recross the bridge to find a grocery store.
On the island with Fort Pickens are FINE (not expensive or
dress-up) restaurants......a pier.....good surf......beach.....
I recommend the highway 87/beach route.
