Fuel availability

In about a month will traveling from North Carolina to Yellowstone.
After looking at Google Maps it appears that on one leg of my trip from North Platte, NE to Casper, WY about 400 miles via I-25 it looks fairly desolate. I'm just concerned about availability of fuel along the route since my TV has 26 gal tank.

Would also like to know about I-80 I will use for return.

Thanks

  • "The Next Exit" is a great book to travel with. All interstates are included, and all services (gas stations ... RV friendly ones are highlighted, hotels, restaurants) are indicated at each exit. Camp on!
  • Stop at the welcome center as you get to wyoming. They are friendly and last time there they had sewer dump available for RV's. One of the few places I encountered in travels. We stayed at the KOA in Casper 2 years ago, fairly nice place few tree's! Time permitting try to visit the Tetons, we think they are much nicer than Yellowstone. Jackson has a great visitor center and is on the boundary of the National Elk Refuge. Good place to visit with or without kids.
If you want a good break stop in Thermopolis to visit the Hot Springs. There is a free one that is a state park and across the street is a commercial one with indoor/outdoor pools. Kids would like this one have water slides etc. Not really out of way the yellowstone, but off instates on state roads.
  • 1/2 a tank? I still a good 4+ hours of driving left with 1/2 a tank.
  • It's 221 miles to Cheyenne via I-80 with numerous gas stations alone that route between North Platte and Cheyenne.

It's 180 miles to Casper from Cheyenne on I-25 again with numerous gas stations along that route.

It might be the 'Old West' but there are 'services' available.

Get down to 1/2 tank.....watch the Exit Signs. They show services available.
  • We came through most of that area this spring and I don't remember any shortage of gas / diesel stations unless you're trying to fill up at 2:00 AM in the morning. During normal hours (8AM to 8PM?)all fuel sites in the littler towns should be open. If you're using a GPS, make sure the POIs for fuel stations is turned on.

  • We just did the opposite since Wed. We have traveled from Cheyenne to Lincoln,NE. on I-80 and there were lots of fuel stops avail. The same is true for the run from I-80 up I-25. I am running about 10mpg and fill up with about 25 gal. every 250-275 miles leaving me with a 9 gal. spare in tank. On I-80 there was about 5 construction zones with speed limits down to 55mph, but were not super long. I had a head wind of up to 25mph while east bound. The road is busy, but not crowded. I run at 65mph and let every body else run the 75 speed limit or as fast as they want. There were even trucks running slower than me so i just passed them. I do not let traffic bother me. If you have the time stop the Gateway Arch that goes over I-80 at Kearney,NE. Well worth your time. We did it this morning as we left Kearney.
  • Don't wait till your running on fumes and you should have no problems.
