You probably don't know me, but I recognise your name from some excellent posts :).
Hang in there! My mom is in her 70s, and she broke a chunk off an ankle bone last summer. Staying off it drove her nuts, but eventually the time was up and she could start walking on it, and after a few more months she could walk for hours again :).
The best tips I can give you from her experience:
- Rent an electric mobility scooter, if it's useable where you live. She didn't want to, at first, but when she finally did she sure was glad. It really beats staying home! Are you in a town or city with bus service? The busses will have lifts, so you can take the scooter on the bus and go to grocery stores and stuff. And once the snow is gone, you can go for long rides on the sidewalks!
- Ask your doc for a referral to physical therapy. Even while you have to stay off your foot, there are exercises you can do so that you don't lose too much muscle. Often rebuilding lost muscle takes longer than healing from the original injury! And many docs don't refer to PT unless requested.
