Gas Prices - NC vs SC (SC is much cheaper!)

If anyone plans to be driving south through North Carolina, if you can, wait until you cross into South Carolina to fill up with gas. It is about 30¢ cheaper there. I guess if you are driving north, reverse this procedure! I didn't really pay attention to diesel - I was in the toad.

Gas near the NC coast is around $3.30, around $3.00 in SC.

And yes, I tanked up my toad in NC and drove 6 miles into SC and was NOT happy!

  • Yep. NC has some of the highest gas taxes in the country, Always fill up in SC on the way home.
  • Just filled up at $3.85 in California. I'd take either one of those prices. At $3.00 gallon I'd be driving our V10 everywhere.
  • Regular travelers in most regions know where taxes are higher or lower.

I've always tried to get from Missouri to Indiana without having to buy gas in Illinois.

In the 1960's, NC was the place to buy cigarettes, they were cheaper at border stores than in the BX.

According to this map, SC at $.352 is 2nd lowest (only Alaska is lower). Virginia is also in the 'below 36' group. NC is .562, with the likes of Illinois, Indiana and Washington.

In South Carolina, federal funds make up 79 percent of state road and bridge spending. In Alaska, it’s 93 percent. The two states have the lowest gasoline taxes in the country.

  • Right now gas prices in Myrtle Beach area are mostly UNDER $3.00 a gallon. Some as low as $2.93! Right along the Grand Strand, prices may be over the $3.oo a gallon mark, but go 2 miles inland and they're lower.
  • Yep it has been that way for a few years now. NC raised their gas taxes and priced themselves out of the market for travelers. When heading to Myrtle Beach or Florida from Maryland, I fill up at the last exit in VA and then again in SC skipping over NC. Last year when we went to FL, I don't recall South GA fuel prices being all that bad.
  • We locals always wait to cross the border for fill ups en route to FL. And we catch the SC prices before entering GA, too.
  • Along the I-77 corridor, fuel prices have long been cheaper in S.C. and VA. Flying J was well positioned in Wytheville, Va and just south of Rock Hill, SC.
