CPI in Mexico often does not represent reality. It does not include transportation nor gasoline. Some of the goods in the basket are not really representative. At one time milk was not in the basket. But shirts are included!! I know that when I go to a large super prices are higher all the time! Restaurant prices are also higher. Just think how high fuel prices hurt a worker making say double the minimum wage. A 2 peso increase in gasoline would be a huge percentage of a poor person's income. Unlike Canada there is very little in assistance for the working poor. The disparity between the rich and he poor is almost sinful. We know women who hop on a plane to Tucson to buy some clothing. About $500 or more round trip ! Meanwhile every might there are street people digging in our garbage bin for anything of value! The number of street people has probably doubled in 18 months. This week DIF ( sort of like social services) announced they are broke! However I will say that the average Mexican has a heart. They do help the needy. The " caravan" is getting lots of help from NGO's. Even the Mexican Government has offered to help with food, shelter and even shelter. In the USA right wing armed groups are heading to the border to protect the USA from the criminal refugees!!!
