Gasser Class A Travel from Tacoma WA to Lost Wages NV

Current plan is to avoid I-5 as much as it makes sense to do so.

This means heading east on I-84 when approaching Portland. It would seem a good idea to avoid the Cabbage Hill between Pendleton and La Grande on I-84.

The goal is to eventually end up on USH95 somewhere between Oregon and Idaho.

At the moment, I am thinking that USH395 may be my best choice based on what I remember of the other routes; I'm probably wrong though.

Any recommendations?
  • Nothing bad about cabbage hill except its a long climb. Trucks do it all the time.
Now, if you really want to avoid freeways, take US26 over MtHood connecting with US97 south at Madras. Just south of LaPine take 31 SE toward Lakeview. Or contunie south on 97 and at KlamathFalls head SE to Alturus,CA where you pick up 395 into Reno. 395 will take you down the east side of the Sierras. Be aware though this time of year anywhere east of the Cascades can be cold overnites. Most campgrounds will be closed or very limited service.
  • US 395 is certainly more scenic!, not sure when you are going but there should be some nice fall clolors in the next month or so!
Death Valley is on the way ,or you can head Further east and do a loop through Zion and Bryce .
    Lots of options and scenery!
