Gig Harbor, WA to Prosser, WA

Know we won't be able to miss all the traffic next Thursday around Tacoma but looking for good route and times to get over to I-90.

I agree with enblethen's route. It really is the shortest and quickest. Hwy 18 can back up bad, I'd avoid it during the rush hours if you can. If you take off about 9-10AM you're probably in a bit of a sweet spot. But if there is an accident then it's a crap-shoot. Try the Waze app on your smart phone, it can d good job of alerting you to traffic back ups and give you alternatives.

Do be aware that Prosser like where I live is heading back to triple diget temps. Are you coming over for the Water Follies?

Left Gig Harbor a little after 9am Thursday and the route worked fine.

    Thanks again.
  • I agree with the 7/12 route, quite scenic, though probably takes longer. A 2 laner; a few twisty areas, but a nice drive overall, dropping right into Yakima. TB
  • An alternate scenic route would be WA 7 south from Tacoma and connect with US 12 at Morton and take US 12 over the hills.

Thanks for the replies with good info.

Prosser has been very warm but our home base (when we're there) is Reno which gets hot also. We've been on the Oregon coast (temps in the high 60's) since June 7 and arrived in Gig Harbor Thursday. We knew getting back inland it was going to be a big change but we actually don't mind the heat...that much. :)

Wasn't aware of the Water Follies but will look into. we will be at Wine Country RV Park for a week or so.

  • North on I-5 to WA 18 to I-90. You will miss a lot of I-5 and I-405 traffic.
WA 18 is two lane for a portion over Tiger Summit, but from I-5 to nearly the summit is multi-lane.
