Gillette to Douglas Wyoming Rt. 59

Has anyone traveled Route 59 from Gillette, Wyoming to Douglas, Wyoming? We have a 40 foot 5th wheel and a F350 Dually. How are the road conditions? Are there passing lanes? Any fuel stops for diesel?

Thank you, Rich

That describes most of the state of WY. :B
  • The only real concern may be wind. Can get quite windy at times.
  • Just drove it on Sunday. Light truck traffic due to day of the week, but still had numerous oil field tankers going both directions. Passing lanes are available on most hills for both traffic directions.

Fill up in Gillette and top off in Douglas if you are planning to use I-90 and I-25 so you don't have to buy expensive Interstate interchange fuel someplace like Chugwater. Regular gas was $2.78-$2.85 and diesel was ~$3.35.
  • I haven't driven it for 6-7 months but it has always been a good road. Some light traffic with some energy/coal workers but nothing bothersome. The ONLY fuel would be in Wright, about 40 miles S. of Gillette. It has one, maybe two stores that would have to have diesel for all of the local trucks.
Wright has a nice little rest area, with a small lake and restrooms, and a playground.
Enjoy the drive as you will see more antelope than you can count and coal trains heading south to Texas with 120+ cars each.
