Glacier National Park trip

I am taking Rt 29 north from Kansas City up to Sioux Falls and either west through South Dakota or north on Rt 29 to Fargo North Dakota, then west on 94 on my way to Glacier NP. I have seen most all of the tourist attractions in SD but haven't been to ND. Can someone tell me if it is worth the extra time and miles to take the ND route, especially if there are enough RV parks to stay in and things to see?

  • The northern route is less traveled. NoDak has plenty to see. Glacier NP has a short season and is loved to death. I would suggest entering from the east side which is much quieter.
  • We enjoyed Hwy 2 across the top of Montana - although we typically don't like to drive more than a few hours each day, we made it from Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park to Glacier (actually Whitefish, MT on the west side of Glacier) in a long day's drive. We didn't want to stop because we were in a hurry to visit good friends in Whitefish. They recommended Hwy 2 as the best route. Good choice!
  • Teddy Roosevelt NP, South is located at Medora, ND and if you head north on 85 from there you can visit the North portion of the park, both different and unique from other NPs. Then taking hwy 2 across the top of Montana, Fort Peck has a great COE campground and Havre has a tour of Underground Havre available. Of course there is a lot of oil business being done along this same stretch.
  • Either Capt. Lewis or Capt. Clark are usually available for questions and photos.
  • From where you are, I would go across South Dakota. We have done that several times. We will see you there in a couple of weeks.
