going through atlanta ga

Hi to all from denny and my wee blonde ida, I have herd horror stories about going through Atlanta ga. Can any one tell me if the traffic is that bad there. We are traveling from Iowa to florida to visit our son and his family. The first big trip with our granite ridge motor home and pulling our bass boat too. WE are looking forward to the trip but I keep my ears open about Atlanta. Also has any one just slept in the rest areas while traveling on the interstates. we would like to use camp grounds but being new at RVing not sure how to find camp grounds along the way. thank all of the good people on the open roads forum. Want to meet as many of you that my wee blond and I can denny and my wee blonde ida

I lived in Atlanta many years, and my in-laws are still there so we go there frequently.

During rush hours, traffic is frequently stop-and-go. There is usually not much benefit to the bypass vs. going straight through, as the bypass tends to be as busy as the straight-through.

It's 6 or so lanes of interstate and people are hauling a$$ when the traffic is moving. Keep to the inside and you will be fine. Try to stay a couple of lanes over, though, because frequently a right-most lane turns into exit-only and disappears.

Once you get in a travel lane, it's smooth sailing.

When we travel to Disney World from Huntsville, we have stayed at truck stops, Cracker Barrel parking lots, and Walmart parking lots.

Many rest areas no longer allow overnight parking. I don't know why. But there are plenty of Cracker Barrels and Walmarts that would love your business. Always check with the manager.

  • I'm one that likes to site-see while passing through big citys. Been through Atlanta many times via I-75. No problem if you just avoid rush hour as some here are saying. Have a great trip!
  • Only thing I can add about going through town, especially on I-75, is to stay out of the left and right lanes. The left lanes can lead to a short ramp and dead end to left or right. We had a bus load of college kids crash after the drive made a wrong exit a few years ago. Several were killed. Stay out of the extreme right as well. Too many people entering the interstate causing things to slow down and making you change lanes. Pick a lane toward the middle and stick with it. Try to run with the traffic as bet you can, but leave a little buffer between you and the guy in front. Watch the signs and if you intend to 85 south, then start working toward the right when you start seeing signs notifying you of it coming up
