GOING TO CANADA PEI, NB, NS

We plan to visit the Canadian Maritimes beginning mid August to maybe mid September. We will be camping in a 38 ft class A motorhome. Our questions are:
How full would you expect the provincial and national campgrounds to be at that time?
How difficult will it be to find a campsite--government or private during this time?
We normally don't make advance reservations: will this be a problem ?
How cold and rainy would you expect the weather to be ?

Thank you for any input.
  • Plan at least a month for round trip, When I had thought about doing cross continent, I thought 2 months. In the end I did it in a bit over a month.

    Go two different routes

I went north on the going way Lake Saguenay, and across to Timmins thence because you have to down to Thunder Bay. & worked north really starting at Winnipeg. Had to go up and down a bit Hay River, Fort St. John, Whitehorse, Skagway.

Coming back, my bit want was Royal Tyrell Museum, which I know you've seen. I guess my point is find yourself some targets and go for them. Sault Ste Marie has Agawa Canyon with much colour in fall, There are historic features all the way east of there. Yeah time wise, it's nice to go around Toronto, Montreal Quebec City, but don't leave them out of your life

And make sure you go all the way east, like St. John's. The wisdom re. spending your $ on Marine Atlantic Ferry is two weeks on the island of Newfoundland. Don't know but what you might include a day up and down the mountain of Gros Morne.

    Enjoy.

  • Gary, 10 days, really? Heck we go from south west Ontario and I really mean south, to Alberta in 7 days and 7 days back. Last year we did it in 4 there and back as my wife had a rotator cuff tear and wasn't at all comfortable, so she pushed. When we were a lot younger and crazier we did it in 3 days coming and going or is that going and coming!!! Only had a month off when I was working for a living and not getting cash for life like now, :)
  • When we were in the Maritimes a couple of years back, things were winding down in September. Some parks were already closed after Labor Day. Those that were open had plenty of spaces. It was a good time to go, even if you had to look around sometimes.
  • We are talking about the big drive...west to east and back...should be able to do it in 10 days eh. Perhaps this is the time to ask.....boondocking in the Maritimes? yes/no? I do it here, most anywhere on the west side of things, but haven't much of a clue how it is viewed back east. Thoughts, please.

  • National parks are free this year (admission anyway) so they will be very busy. The mid to end of August is a very busy time as people get their last camping in before school starts. Depending on where you are going it may be wise to make some reservations.
