- lbrjetExplorerIf you take 89 to 15 don't use Rt 14. Long steep twisty downhill. Drops 3000 feet in 10 miles with up to 8% grades. Would not be fun.
- CloudDriverExplorerI'll throw out an intermediate between 2gypsies Interstate route and Skip's much more interesting route.
I15 to Brigham City just north of Salt Lake City, then route 89 all the way up to Alpine Junction and on to Jackson. Route 89 goes through the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway between Logan and Garden City with about a mile or so of 6-7% downgrade into Garden City. Beyond that point there are some ups and downs but no major grades and it's a beautiful drive. From Alpine the road is in the Snake River Canyon up to Jackson. - ReneeGExplorerAdditional input - we've done all these routes with ease, but then again we are comfortable with mountain pass driving and have the TV to do the job efficiently. The Mountain Directory West is always in the pickup for reference.
- agesilausExplorer IIIDitto on Skip's route. We've done it hauling our 34 ft fver, but we have a newer one ton. there is really zero practical choice until you get past Orderville UT. You'll be on US 89. North of there you can turn west to I-15, east to 12, or continue north to I-70
- skipncharExplorerOne of the most SCENIC routes would be north through Utahs highway 12 through the Grand Staircase Escalante and end up going through Vernal Utah. From Vernal take highway 191 north through the Flaming Gorge rec area (one of the unspoiled wilderness areas left). This would bring you out near Rock Springs Wyoming and it's a straight shot to the Tetons from there.
Keep in mind this is not the EASIEST route to follow nor is it the fastest but we've always considered the TRIP to be as important as the destination. LOTS of mountain driving so if this isn't your comfort zone, just take the Interstate but the back roads are certainly worth the extra time and effort.
Good luck and have a great trip / Skip - Dick_BExplorerMountain Directory West would be a good resource.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIIf your truck is sufficient for your 5th wheel you should have no problems. Many RVers do the drive.
However, if you're only going to Grand Canyon and no place else nearby (there are many awesome national parks in the area) then here is the easiest route - not the scenic route.
I-40 west to I-15 north to Idaho Falls, ID. Pick up hwy 26 east (fairly flat) to Alpine and north on 89 into Jackson, WY and Grand Teton Nat'l Park.
