- When I got my most recent cell phone from TelCel, it was not a throw away, but it cost me 300 pesos and came with 300 pesos of airtime. So it was basically free. We recharged it for 100 pesos and that lasted us for about a month. So it's very economical to just stop at at a TelCel store and ask for a phone right when you cross the border.
- We buy a cheap throwaway prepaid phone from Telcel to use when we need a phone in Mexico. We don't use it often but it is there if we need it. We bought our phone a few years ago and the first thing we do when we got to Mexico is go to a Telcel office and get it reactivated. We get 200 pesos of time and that is usually all we need for our months in Mexico. It is way to expensive to try to us our US phone in Mexico.
- I have a Canadian cell phone - I have purchased service that allows me to use my phone in Mexico and I have used it several times with local calls and calling home. I assume it will work with 078 but am hoping that I don't ever need to call but it is nice having the security of knowing I could if needed.
- Using a Canadian cell phone in Mexico is futile. I doubt you could dial 078. Get a cheap Telmex phone. No contract required. We carry one for emergencies and often call CG's while on the road to check for construction or detours.
