Chiefneon - pauljExplorer IIRegardless of complaints about GPS and mapping programs, the amount of information that we have at our finger tips (with touch screens that is literal) is phenomenal. Twenty years ago you had to depend on yearly issues of state maps, and a trip pack from AAA. Now we can get updated maps online, and realtime traffic reports.
When people do run into problems with these systems, it is usually because they turn off their own powers of observation and thinking, and assume that the voice in that little screen is an omniscient god. - hitchupExplorer

Thanks everyone. Our daughter just contacted us. We will be purchasing an iPad and an iPhone. Should take care of a multitude of needs we have while on the road.
That's what we use as backup when the F450 disc is out-of-date. - pauljExplorer II

And you turn as directed every time ... :)
I don't they have developed a 'learning-circuit'. If the database is unchanged, it is going to give the same fastest/shortest route each time you ask it. But doesn't your TomTom have a means of entering corrections, i.e. 'don't use this segement'? My old TT has something like that, though I've never used it. I believe they also have a way of reporting errors to the company. - outdoorloversExplorerWe have a Tom Tom now and every time we have gone to Park City, UT, it has us turning into a wall about 45 min. from our destination as we approach the turn off to Sundance. lol
- RVUSAExplorerboth tom tom and the google maps and my cell have caused profanity slips from me. :D
- loulou57ExplorerWe have a Tom Tom GPS in the truck. The mapping is great, logging roads in northern Ontario even showed up. We found that very handy after travelling over 100km on one not knowing where it went, LOL
- pauljExplorer II"Will be using it on the road as we travel. Tired of wrong directions, wrong turns, getting stuck with a truck and travel trailer and trying to turn around, etc." - that's not what I'd call handheld.
You want something that gives driving directions, not just your location on a trail. A passenger might hold it, but it is more convenient if mounted in a bracket in full view of the driver.
Smart phones/tablets are a good way of getting driving directions. However, there have been complaints about Apple's latest attempt to set up their own proprietary mapping system. The latest complaint to hit the news was about directions to Fairbanks airport parking - they sent drivers across a runway.
Garmin and TomTom are two well established companies providing GPS with driving directions. Google Maps is also good. - outdoorloversExplorerThanks everyone. Our daughter just contacted us. - Us_out_WestExplorerSo why a hand held and not a full featured GPS that will give you more info?
