In the north, HEB supermarkets reign. The are havens for both Mexicans and foreigners.
78% of all the products on the shelves, including gourmet, are Mexican. We are slowly distancing ourselves from the U.S., for many reasons, and moving closer to trade agreements with Europe and Latin America.
As much as I love Mexico, I just returned from two weeks in Ecuador visiting six different cities small and large. It is full of Americans especially in Cuenca which is a mirror of San Miguel de Allende. The national currency is the U.S. dollar (they don't manage their own currency), the infrastructure beats any country I've ever lived in or visited, and everything from food to rent and utilities are much cheaper than Mexico. One exception is cars and trucks. I've worked there twice a year for the last three years. I could move their tomorrow.
