- Roy_LynneExplorerIt is a nice route through Oregon and make sure you stop at John Day Fossil Beds with your camera loaded. Also a tour of the Chinese Doctors museum in town is well worth the trip. I would think the weather would be find but if it isn't, not a big deal if you cut over to 97 on either 26 or further south on 20. If you haven't seen Crater Lake, it is worth the side trip.
Just in case I would buy some chains, as around Mammoth Lakes it might get crazy. We are going later in the year and our alternate plan is to take Hwy 50 to Nv 95 to 6 and back to Bishop and 395. While it looks a lot longer, according it google maps its only about 20 minutes longer as straight. - pauljExplorer IINorthern Oregon is a bit hilly, but nothing worse that what you find across southern BC.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIWe've driven the whole 395 quite a few times with our 40' diesel and had no issues. You won't need to fill often so just drive on the top half of your tank and don't wait until the last minute to find fuel although it's available but the distances might give you problems if you're near 'empty'.
395 is an absolutely gorgeous highway and there are plenty of places to stay along the way. You will have some stretches of 6% grades. It's not flat but not difficult. - John___AngelaExplorer

Have taken 395 all the way down to LA. That is our preferred route from Oregon to LA. But not in the winter time.
Awesome. Is there much in the way of overnight stops. How about truck traffic, fuel etc.
Just a regular highway. Some trucks, normal gas stations, campgrounds, RV parks, towns, grocery stores. You get the idea. Normal stuff.
More at ease now. We don't need much but a little population is nice in case of break downs etc. I'll go anywhere in the little 22 footer but the 40 footer with trailer....not so much. :)
Thanks - korbeExplorer

We have traveled 395 through Oregon and enjoyed the trip. We prefer 2-lane secondary roads over the freeways. Much more to see and can pull over to take in the sites all day long.
Thats what I was thinking as well. Have you done it all the way down to California. Wonder what that stretch is like. - korbeExplorerWe have traveled 395 through Oregon and enjoyed the trip. - old_guyExplorergas stations are far apart in Oregon. slow going. and if you do find a gas station, the price of fuel is higher than on the freeways.
