headed west, where to?

Leaving FL the end of May beginning of June, never been out west.

Always doing the east coast and Canada over the last few years.

We have 3 months set aside, where would you suggest we visit to make the most out of the trip?

I typically drive 500 miles a day with no problem,
I am setup to boondock off grid

  • We, too are leaving Florida for the west, but by way of NY/NJ for family obligations.
The plan is May through September...in a B Class...Winnebago ERA!
I have been trying to put together a loose plan...hung a map on the dining room wall with sticky flags for possible destinations.
Hopefully, lots of experienced folks will chime in with ideas :)

In three months you can see a great deal of the "West". If I was driving, I'd head out along the southern route, to see New Mexico/Arizona/Nevada, then hit southern California, head north along the coast all the way up to Seattle, and then over through Idaho, hit Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, down to Utah, The GSL, the southern Utah Parks, then east again through Colorado and the Rockies.

Here's a suggested route with areas that I'd be sure to see, in general terms.

  • Kind of depends on your interests!

I know people who come to the west and spend the whole time in cities: LA, Las Vegas, SF, and so forth; all the rest is just wasted time in between cities. Other people find nothing of interest in cities and spend their time out of doors, of which there is richness in the west.

Similarly, among those who come west for the out of doors, there are those who prefer to stick to the high mountains and forests, and those who want to see the landscapes, flora and fauna of the great basin.

And there are those who are interested in the rich and ancient cultural history of the west.

Whatever you're interested in, there is enough here to occupy you for a lifetime or two.

My recommendation is to pick a rather smaller area of the west to explore (it's way too big!) and research what interests you in that smaller area.

    :)

If Ivy Log catches this post he will likely be able to relate to what you are after.

He did a similar trip recently.

    Look over this Photo Journal
    from Stan Parker;

Both are usually in Florida over the winter so you might even get a face to face.

    My personal suggestion is Colorado.

Check out the link above to the National park Service's website. You will find parks, from the big well known to the smaller equally impressive, that cover natural wonders, historic sites, and cultural events. The website has a plethora of pictures, information to plan your trip, and information on camping. After you decide on what parks interest you, then you can plan your travel route.
