I agree with most suggestions. Here is what I would do: I-295 south out of Boothbay, get on I-95 south to I-495 in Ma. I-495 to I-90 (toll road - Mass Pike) west to I-84 west thru Conn. to I-87 south in Newburgh, NY. to I-287 South into NJ. I would stay on I-287 to Garden State Pkwy to Atlantic City. This route keeps you out of biggest headaches, just small headaches... Let me add that this route is approx. 550 miles versus I-95, which is 490 miles.
This route works fine but 84 turns north for a while before reaching I87. If you don't mind paying tolls just take the Mass Tpk to I87. A shorter route is to take 84 to 684 to 287 at White Plains and the Tap Zee on to the NJ Tpk. Try to hit the Tap Zee area mid day to avoid heavy traffic. Same goes for 84 thru Danbury and Woodbury in Conn. Rush hour is dead stop in this area. I often slide thru all of this at night. Westbound the Tap Z is toll free. Weekends are usually much easier too unless all the big city folks are heading out to the country. I drive to/from fla and Boothbay every summer. Sometimes twice. And there is no sure thing when it comes to traffic. Sometimes I sail thru and other times its a mess. Good luck.
