And once we go that far one day, we'd better have something really fun to do the next. I think finding activities that they haven't experienced much before is key. Even the hot springs at Mt. Lassen are pretty intriguing to most kids.
I'm getting negative feedback from both my 12 & 14 year old daughters about being bored and too much time in the car.
For your trip, that might be a few days in Bend. Take a rafting trip. Get some head lamps and explore a lave tube. Some of the camp sites in Newberry Crater are right near the water with sandy beaches, so even once you camp, the kids can skip rocks, wade, whatever. Plus, there's an obsidian lave flow right in the crater. Pretty interesting to see so much obsidian in one place. The kids might like that.
On the coast, you might check out the area around Cannon Beach. Maybe someone else here can list all the attractions there, but it's a real family draw. Further down the coast, take a day or two exploring the light houses and go to the beach at low tide and look for starfish, etc.
