Hershey Pa to Clinton CT

Hubby and I are traveling in 40 ft motorhome with tow car. Leaving Hershey in a few days to Clinton CT to visit family members. Looking for the best advice possible to get around New York into CT with this "monster". LOL It will be a first for us. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Oh, are you staying at Riverdale Campground in Clinton? We were there this past Memorial Day weekend. Nice campground, can get "partyish" on weekends but the people there are very nice.

What time are you traveling? I wouldn't go near New York City during rush hour or during the day, but late night - very early morning sometimes isn't bad. It is pretty cool to drive through NYC at, say, 3am. But then again, that is when you might hit construction zones - although they are a lot nicer to drive through than rush hour traffic! A lot of repaving has been done the last couple years, but I95 is so heavily traveled that new pavement only stays smooth for about a year or so.

Tappanzee Bridge can be busy... and Lord knows those "temporary repair plates" that they use on that bridge are horrendous. Has anyone been over the bridge recently? Are those plates still there? Otherwise it is a pretty nice drive.

The suggestions about 84 and 81 are something to think about, and I would suggest that route for daytime travel. Again, though, road conditions on those routes were not great when last I was on them about 3 years ago. They may have been repaved recently.

To miss all the NYC mess...go from Hershey to 81...take 81 to 78 and then go north off 78 onto 287 to Sufferin,NY...take 87 north for a short distance to 84 east..this will have a small toll, but worth it.....stay on 84 past Waterbury ,Ct to 691...take 691 over to 91 north, again a short ride......91 north to rt 9 south..this 4 lane road goes all the way to 95, get on 95 south for a short ride and you are there...have safe trip...Chuck
  • You could always do 81 to 78 to 287, then catch 84.

Avoids most of the hills on 81, and takes you to the same place.
  • A note for mdamerell, I95 the Q bridge in New Haven Ct is under construction avoid rush hours.
  • I81 to I84 to Meriden Ct then 691 to I91 North, take exit 22s Rt 9 south to I95 East to Clinton, there are much shorter routes but these are 4 lane highways all the way. I grew up in the area and we are camping in Hammonasset state park in madison. Hope this helps I should have mentioned there are no tolls this route, except for the Newburg bridge in NY
  • We are headed to Mystic CT in a week and we plan to use I-287, Tappan Zee Bridge to I-95. The roads over the George Washington and the Cross Bronx are always rough not to mention the traffic.

I have done the I-81, I-84, CT-34, I-95 in car and semi. I think the hill on I-81 is bigger climbing into Scranton. Mileage wise they are all with in 20-30 miles.

I do agree to avoid the GW and Cross Bronx is a prudent plan.

    Good luck and enjoy.
  • Did you consider taking I-81 north to Scranton and then take I-84 east into New England?
It's probably about 35-40 miles longer but, you bypass NYC.
To me it's much less stressful than fighting the city traffic.
We use this route when going to Maine.
  • We use Rt 84 to Rt 81 or reverse from Cape Cod to anywhere West. Would never travel Rt 95 thru or anywhere near NY City. Makes it much more relaxing and only a little longer. Going to Wash. DC this week ( Cherry Hill) and this is our preferred routing.
