Hiawassee Ga via 441

Looking at heading to Hiawassee Ga in August. Be driving north on I 75 and was thinking about heading over to 441 from Macon. Anyone have any pros or cons with the route, I’ll be towing a 30ft TT.
  • We are heading that way Wednesday. 441 is mostly 4 lanes with some small towns and it's nice road. We change our route periodically, we go up there alot. We decided not to go through Helen and going over the mountain this time. I think we will stay on I75 to I16 and then 129 and 441. This time we are heading to Clayton and taking 76 to Hiawassee. The last time we got off I75 at Forsythe and took 83 and then hit 441. Be sure and take the bypass around Athens. Good Luck!
  • Never been up that way with theTT but been to Clayton and other areas before. Wanted to stay away from Atlanta . Where are you staying in Clayton, my DW loves that town. Thanks for the advice, have a safe trip.
  • Bears Den, We lease a RV site in Hayesville, NC. This time we are staying with a friend on Lake Chatuge and will take the TT up there in mid April and leave it until November 1st. We love the area and me, originally from southern Virginia love the mountains. Hayesville reminds me of Mayberry...lol! BTW...don't blame you about Atlanta, the place is a zoo!. Safe travels!
  • 441 is fine. Done that before.

Avoid at all costs the 75/16 interchange. It is a total CF with construction. Dangerous enough without a trailer. Lap527, I'd stick to Forsyth exit if I were you.

I would take 441/23 all the way to Clayton and then US 76. 76 is a much better road than 75/17 from Helen.

To get around that bottleneck get off I75 at GA96 and take it to the end in Jeffersonville. Then GA540 to US441. Not only does it avoid Macon, but Dublin as well. 511ga.org
