I have a 33ft fifth. I was thinking of driving down CA1 from Monterey thru Big Sur and on to Santa Barbara. Is this possible
Depends on how good of a driver you are. It is very possible but there are a few tight corners and you will need to know where your wheels are both for the fifth and the tow vehicle on the corners. - RVcrazyExplorerI would not suggest this! High cliffs with drop offs and no guard rails, no extra space on the sides of the road. You will not get to enjoy the view with the fiver on the back... Just the truck is plenty!
- kalynzooExplorerPossible, yes. Don't Do It!!!
You will be on the wrong side...drop off cliff side, with little or no shoulder a flimsy guardrail and a vertical drop into the ocean. There are very tight curves...like you can check your own tail-lights. The road is well traveled so you will have cars speeding toward you, light trucks coming at you, and you will probably have a line of cars angrily following you.
It is a beautiful drive. Basecamp in Carmel or Morro Bay and take a day drive in the tow vehicle to enjoy the sights and pull outs. But this is the one area of PCH-1 that I would not drive in an RV. I've done it twice, 10 years apart, going North. Guess my fading memory got the best of me.
Happy Trails. - jim1632ExplorerThe road to south of Monterrey is rather twisty. I agree that planning a day trip on the very scenic section using your truck will offer the most serenity and the best views. Just plan a 100 miles or so from Monterrey to a return point.
- HarvardExplorerYou will not enjoy the experience, narrow, twisty and slow.
- lhenry8113ExplorerTake a look at highway #101-very pretty drive and larger road--have used it many times towing our 5'vr. If you are a KOA member there is a small KOA campground--N. of Monterey and S. of Santa Cruz on the coast called "Moss Landing"--one of our favorite spots right next to the ocean with a fisherman's village & Marina--also n. of Santa Barbara in Buelton, a campground called Flying Flags RV Resort, along the 101 just outside a quaint Danish village called "Solvang"--a must see. Santa Barbara has a great pier which you can drive your vehicle onto--park, and eat at a variety of restaurants and stroll thru the shops. If you have a chance-be sure to see the Mission of Santa Barbara. Lars
- OutdoorPhotograExplorerBy all means travel the Pacific Coast Highway - BUT - leave the 5er in Monterey! It is not safe, period. You could drive Monterey to Cambria which is the prettiest part. Double back on 101 to pick up the 5er and then use 101 to Santa Barbara.
- Two_HandsExplorerSR 1 (the Pacific Coast Highway) from a point just south of Monterey to just north of San Simeon is a great drive for passenger vehicles and motorcycles. Not for big rv's.
- VTLeeExplorerHow is south of Monterey for a pickup camper?
- CKNSLSExplorerPlease do not go on this road with your rig!
