Highway 20 in New York

Has anyone traveled Highway 20 from Buffalo N.Y., east to 495 out side of Boston. Wondered what the road was like, and if this is a practical route.

  • Rt 20 travels in four directions - east, west, up and down, through many small towns and villages (stop and go, traffic lights) with several low height underpasses along the way. If not in a hurry and not towing, it is a rather picturesque drive. Would not recommend it if towing due to the underpasses, small villages, and hills. The hills are not large but definitely steep. Good luck, Mike

X-2, if you even THINK you may want to hurry a little, forget it, there's about a 1/2 million traffic lights.
  • I drove US Hiway 20 from Buffalo NY to Boston , sort of .
Only we started on US Hiway 20 in OREGON .
We kept going until we found the Atlantic Ocean .
There are some books that outline all of the sites along the way .
It was 2 lane in the west and lots of 4 lane in the east .

Back in 2000, after traveling out West on a lot of Black Roads, we elected to leave Troy, NY and avoid the toll road, on the way to Buffalo. What we saved in tolls we spent, and then some, in Gas and Brakes, now don't get me wrong, it was a great scenic drive, beautiful country and the most well preserved and beautiful Barns I have seen anywhere but Lancaster, PA, but as I recall at the bottom of every -- EVERY -- Hill was a RED light, and as I remember it there were a lot of hills. This single fact made the drive very demanding in a Coach and required your full attention.

While I still try to do as many Black roads as possible, IMHO, it is rare to find a road that is any fun to drive on this side of the Mississippi. Like I've said it's hard and if you are driving East you might have to stop at the bottom of all these hills and then go up them from a standing stop.

You can do it just don't get on any schedule and enjoy the drive as it passes slowly by your window.

    BOL,

This is one reason why I am asking, I haven't much luck traveling the two lanes in the east either. Would prefer traveling west.

    BOL,
  • I travel Rt 20 from Syracuse, NY West to Buffalo and east to Albany. It is a good route nicely bypassing most major metros till you hit Albany area.
Cannot help you on the rte 20 issue in Massachusetts as my favorite route through Mass is Route 2. But some sections of that route have steep grades and hairpin turns. So without knowing what you are driving I cannot advise. I can say I have no hesitation driving it in my 27 foot MH
