Highway 20, Oregon

Can any of our members offer some insight on traveling Highway 20 in Oregon from Newport to Redmond?
  • Newport to I5 is fine. I5 to the junction with 22 is a bit slow and twisty. Nothing you can handle, just dont be in a hurry. You might consider north on I5 to Salem and take 22 up the hill.
  • I couldn't agree more with the previous person. I live in Sweet Home HWY 20 from Cascadia to the Tombstone summit is miserable but its a fairly short section, not just twisty and turny its also very rough , the road is constantly settling so there are cracks. sections where the pavement is gone also. It gets quite a bit of traffic however there are a handful of turnouts to use.

i5 to 22 is much nicer road to travel , but you will be adding 20 - 30 minutes of extra travel time .

    I hope this helps

  • We just drove Hwy 20 to/from I5, during the day it's fine. There is a section that is/was washed out and the lane narrows, one area there with some construction it's a rather tight corner, but beyond that is fine... during the day. Few years ago we did it at night and I will never do that again.

I can't comment on Hwy 20 into the Cascade, been to many years since I've driven that.
  • As a 64 year old Oregon native if it were me I'd take hwy 20/34 from Newport to I-5, turn north and go to Hwy 22 and take that to Redmond. I been over hwy 20 to the Santiam Pass several times. It's way more fun when I was riding one of my motorcycles than it was towing.
