Highway 301 in Florida

Last year on our trip to Florida there was construction on 301 from I-10 to Ocala, have they finished now? If not I am going from I-10 over to I-75. Thanks
  • I traveled 301 from I-10 to Waldo on Jan. 5th and Mar. 24th of 2013 and did not recall seeing any construction.
  • If you go one or two exits past 301 there is a good road that will lead you into Gainesville. From there you can get I- 75 or 301. I cant remember the route number. Look on a map. Like I said it is just one or two exits west of the 301 exit. That was the way I use to go to the JAX airport when I lived in G-ville
  • If you go 301 watch your speed in Waldo it is the nations number one speed trap and they love to pull over out of towners
  • If is a Florida road, construction is inevitable. The two words road and construction cannot be separated.
  • We all should pay attention and obey speed limits. But, pay real close attention to speed in Lawtey, Fl., for there is a school zone on Hwy 301 in town. Mommas and Dads are naturally concerned about the safety of their younguns and school zones often receive strict enforcement, as they should.

However, some towns breach the "strict enforcement" concept using revenue from traffic tickets to pad city coffers. Several years ago, officers of that major metropolitan town of Lawtey, population 700, wrote over 9,000 tickets in a year (avg. 25 per/day) and generated more than $300,000 for the City budget.

Both, Lawtey and Waldo, have long been known as speed traps. The locals know it. As an ex-LEO, I know it. ABC news has weighed in on it. AAA has paid for billboards along 301 proclaiming it. And FL. DOT has at least made an attempt to post more signage for those approaching Waldo. Hwy 301 is a nice relief from the Interstate rat race. Just watch your speed and pay close attention in those two small towns.
  • Then again if you pay attention to the speed limit and obey it you will have no problem. I have been through those places hundreds if not thousands of times and never been stopped for any reason.
  • Just came thru there last week. No construction, but the LEO in Lawtey had pulled over the fool that passed us up at the speed of sound by the time we got there. Apparently, they were driving so fast that they were unable to read the Black & white billboard announcing the upcoming speed trap.
