Hill City, SD to Sundance, WY

I'd appreciate any inputs regarding routing to Sundance, WY from Hill City via US-16 W
to US-85 North (New Castle, WY) then taking WY-585 in Four Corners, WY to Sundance. I am particularly interested in U.S.-16 from Custer SD to New Castle. Looks like some climbs and tight turns in a couple places from looking at Bing maps. I have a 2004 Forest River (Ford v-10) pulling a toad. Thanks.

  • Guess I am a little late, but I would have taken US-385 north thru the hills to US-85 to I-90.
  • Thanks all for your feedback. Just what I was looking for. We head out this morning. Been agreat trip so far. Looking forward to Devil's Tower today.

Appreciate you taking the time to respond.

  • Like the others have said, no real issues. You will enjoy the beauty of the area.
  • We drove that very route back in 2004. Nice drive, no issues.

    Enjoy & safe travels.
  • Drove it this summer. Not bad. A bit windy and a couple short and moderate grades near jewel caves and a bit after. You will be fine. Go slow and enjoy. It's gorgeous there! Have fun.

  • The only significant curves on US16 are where it goes through the Jewel Cave Nat Mon. There it was narrow and curvy, but no significant grades. But I read there has been construction (this summer or past) to improve that stretch. In any case that portion is short.
