In the old days we used to take 27 to Miami all the time. The southern section by the sugar cane fields had deep canals on both sides. Folks would run off the road and sink sometimes not be found for days, weeks or longer. It was narrow two lane with many fatal head ons. Once 75 and Alligator alley opened up we stopped using 27, but now that it is 4 lanes and much safer, its a good route if you don't mind a few small towns. Route 60 between Tampa and YeeHaw junction is a similar good route East/West across the state. I rarely use I4.
