Hwy 1 north of the bay area vs. big sur?

I've seen a post or two saying that the north part was even better. Not having been to either, can you folks tell me more?

I am daydreaming/planning for a future trip. So much to see! I could do one section of coast and then go inland to the Sierras, or vice versa.
  • Its cool that this was brought up. I was doing some research last night on Hy 1 and found it stretches along some 600 miles of shore line with mud slides and few places to pull over. I changed my mind on about pulling my rig. It don't mean I'm not going to ride it on the Harley. Ill have to find a good place to camp. 101 caught my attention but it look like a lot of traffic.
  • In an RV I guess the north portion is better but I prefer the section between Carmel and San Luis Obispo for scenery.

I have driven north portion in a car and south in a car and on a motorcycle. I would not do either with my 5er. Not that I think it is difficult but it is more relaxing without the RV and the scenery is why you are driving that route. If you cannot stop and see the view you might as well use I-5.

Besides not finding easy pullouts for an RV if you do want to stop, you will have people riding your rear and passing at every opportunity, safe or not. I know a lot of people drive it in RV's but it is a hassle in my view and much more enjoyable in a convertible or motorcycle.
  • Start with this: What are you driving?
Hwy 1 north isn't for everyone and definitely not for every type of RV.
