Hwy 12 Washington State

How is the drive on US 12 from Yakima to Morton? Are there steep grades and sharp curves? Not sure if should come from Yamika or from I 5. We would be traveling from Spokane. Thanks,

  • I've done that trip many times, both directions about once a year for the last 10+ years, both in a class C with toad as well as with bumper pull trailers. It is my favorite route. I avoid Tacoma/Seattle traffic as well as that 10 mile pull up from Vantage when going West. A bit lacking in rest stops between Yakima & I-5 but if your bladder makes it to the top of White Pass the gas station has public rest rooms. The only official rest stop is a couple piles west of Packwood.

When heading west I top off the tank at the King truck stop just before the Tri-Cities on 395 about a mile before heading west onto 12. At 8 mpg with a 50 gal tank that got the motor home to I-5 with plenty to spare.
  • Our first trip west in '11' we took US12 from Missoula to I5 with stops at Orofino, Toppenish and Packwood. Beautiful drive.
  • No, not thinking of this winter! Just doing some planning for late summer this year. I didn't think the road was difficult based on research but always like to hear from fellow RVers. Thanks,
  • It's my favorite route through the Cascades. RVs of all shapes and sizes take it every day. But I wouldn't drive it in winter unless I had to.
  • We did rt.12 from Missoula thru Idaho to I-5 up to Forks Wa. and I have a 1/2 ton TV. and a 30 ft. TT and did it with no problems at all. Its a nice road. Take your time and enjoy the drive.
  • If you mean now, I'd be checking the weather carefully. You're going over White pass.
  • I live just east of Yakima on 12. The road is a very pretty drive but you have to cross White Pass. Not a bad drive just don't get in a hurry and enjoy.
  • Yes. It does climb thru the Cascades, it does follow rivers for a good portion of the road.
    From Spokane to where?
To Portland and points south follow I90 at Ritzlville turn south on US395 toward tri cities. I82 south th I84 west to Portlandis probably the best. If your going north then I90 to Seattle.
  • That's just t nice two lane back road that doesn't get a ton of traffic. It's in good shape and doesn't do any super sharp turns. IIRC there are some hills but nothing bad really.
    You'll be fine.
