hwy 17, Chama NM to Antonito Co

Looking to travel highway 17 from Chama, New Mexico toward Antonito, Colorado in June 2017. Will be in a 40 ft diesel pusher towing a jeep grand cherokee. Any comments or suggestions as to this route for us?
We are used to mountain driving but uncertain about this highway. Thanks Jim and Sharon
  • Should be no problem.
The railroad has big buses that drive this road daily during the summer season.
    Drive safely!

  • Won't be any problems if weather is okay. Tour buses and RVS use it. A beautiful drive.
  • As the other posters stated, not a problem, it's a great drive. Two passes to go over, Cumbres Pass and La Manga Pass, both ~10000 feet. Neither is overly steep and there's not a lot of twisties...curves, yes, but nothing dramatic to be sure. You'll drop down into a beautiful valley on the Colorado side and it's a reasonably flat drive all the way in to Antonito. With the right timing you can also get some great pics of the trains in Antonito.

At the top of Cumbres, there's a great photo op for the Cumbres and Toltec Train if you time it right; the train crosses the pass there and it's a wonderful sight. IIRC, in Chama you can get the time that the train is scheduled to be there, either coming from Chama or coming from Antonito.
  • Thanks for the question about this road on the forum. I also will be traveling this road this summer and was looking for comments. Be safe, see you in Colorado.

Rode the bus last Fathers Day from Chama to Antonito for the train ride. You should have no problems.
  • if you have time take the scenic train ride between those two towns.
  • Drove it last fall when the aspen were at their peak. Most gorgeous fall color I have ever seen in more than 50 years of living in Colorado. Then we rode the Galloping Goose back over Cumbres Pass on the C&TS RR. Great road, wonderful scenery, and, according to USA Today, the best train ride in America. Hard to beat that combination!
