Hwy 191 --- Clifton - Alpine, AZ

I tried to find info on this doing "Search" but no real luck.

Might be in the area right after Memorial Day and wondering if that road is doable in one ton ext cab with SRW. I am used to mountain driving but narrow shelf roads generally exceed our comfort level....been there, done that a lot and just not doing it so much anymore.

Thinking of staying in Roper SP for a couple of days just so we can do it. Other suggestions welcome but need room for 35' 5er with 3 slides.

Input please and thanks.
  • I have only driven this in a car, And will not do it again!! It is not intended for longer vehicles. It is not a fun drive for the driver. There are many switchback type turns. Great if you have an Italian sports car but not a leasurely drive. The driver must be attentive to the road at all times. This is only a nice drive for the passenger and only if they do not have a fear of heights. I would never take an RV of any type on this road! Although it is breathtaking!! My 2cents!
  • with just the truck, it's a great drive. be sure and take in the scenic overlooks.
  • We just drove 191 up from I10 to I40. Very little traffic ---as stated no guard rails very curvey and slow. I am sure it gets close to 10,000ft in elevation. The mine at Morenci is very interesting. At times you think you are on the mine haul road going into the mill.
I have lived in the mountain west all my life so I am very comfortable on mountain roades. I found 191 to be great mountain road. We stayed at a NF campground at Hannagan Meadows it would be to small for your 5er.

If you do use 191 get ready to see lots of burn scare. There have been big fires down there in the past couple of years.
  • Truck only - then it's a great drive. Fairly wide road all the way through some beautiful country. And right after you pass Clifton and Morenci there is a magnificent view down into the copper mine pit. I suggest you do it in this case.

Picture sequence of 191. Click on them to enlarge. Traveling slow there is no problem at all with 191. In race mode on a cycle it could be highly dangerous.
  • Too much of a hurry and not stating myself well :-)

(Have daughter in from London finishing up 2+ week visit and son / dil / 7 & 4 year old grandchildren just left after 6 days is a contributing factor to that as well as wanting to get away!)

Will be doing this ONLY with the truck; NOT the 5er!!! But that still might be too much.

    Thanks.
  • An underpass (short tunnel) in the Clifton area is about 12 foot 10. The road up to Alpine from there has hundreds of turns some pretty tight but not all of course. Continue to check on this because I don't believe you could make it through the little tunnel and the road might be very un comfortable mountain driving. It's a great motorcycle road though
  • Sounds like too much rig to be any fun on 191. Very tight and narrow with lots of steep grades. Unless you enjoy coming around curves in the oncoming lane 191 is not recommended. Roper lake SP is very nice. Don't miss the natural hot spring spa that they rocked in, fed by the hot thermals bubbling up - about 96 to 98 degrees. Un hook the rig and drive up Mt Graham for a fun day trip, great place to pick up all the firewood you want and the views will take your breath away (the road does that as well). :C
