Hwy 199 Crescent City to Grants Pass .... DON'T

The first section is not recommended by GS as RV friendly, for good reason. Very windy, NAROW along cliffs far above the Smith river. Was NOT suitable for a 40' coach towing a car. Once past that section, not bad. Might not be as bad going South, but not for me. I typically heed the GS recommendations, but figured that the rest was o.k. so how bad can it be?
  • The DW and I were just discussing the roads we have enjoyed the most in our travels and 199 is one of them. The OLD Kingsbury Grade from So. Lk. Tahoe to Minden/Gardnerville, NV is another. We have only stopped, turned around and retreated from two roads. The first was the old Kingsbury grade, our '59 VW just didn't have the poop to go up to Tahoe. The other was a shorter road from the ALCAN to Skagway. Worst washboard I've seen in my then, 44 years of driving, the old Bounder would have been in pieces I'm sure.

My Dad would take good but scenic roads just to get away from traffic, to Mom that meant, drop offs, windy, and usually very steep.

    It is all personal preference.
  • Just slow down, it is a beautiful ride. I used to do it every other weekend during the salmon season to Brookings. That was with a camper towing a 19' boat.

  • 199 has been like that for years. Lo trucks and semi's use it all the time. Do not know how many times I have pulled my 5th wheels over that road......from a 24' to and 36' 5ver.
  • GS doesn't recommend it because it's a no trucking zone. We went through it this last June with our 40ft. fifth wheel with no problems. Beautiful ride guess it all depends on your driving comfort and ability.
  • Wow, now you tell me. Went over it just fine with our RV a few years ago. Very spectacular scenery. Had no issues.
  • This is a great road. We have been over it numerous times without any issues.
The lower speed limit is there for a reason, the curves!
  • Gee, pulled my 36 foot fiver total length around 55 feet with no problem. Guess the difference is I maybe have more confidence in my abilities
