Hwy 2 from west Glacier to St. Mary koa campground

Pulling 5th wheel from Oregon and headed to St. Mary KOA campground. Would going to West Glacier and taking Hwy 2 to Browning be a good route pulling camper?

When you get to the intersection of US 2 and US 89 in Browning, turn right, away from St Mary. Travel east on US 2 until you reach Montana 464, 5th intersection, I think. Go north on MT 464 to intersection with US 89 north of St Mary. Turn left to get to St Mary. This route is somewhat longer, but a much easier drive.

Some people turn left at the East Glacier entrance and pass the sign stating, "No trailers longer than 21 feet on this road." I did in fact see the sign on the return trip on the same stretch of Highway 89.

I can attest the best route is to drive to Browning and turning on to the 464. It's well marked for St. Mary.

    Have a great trip!
  • Not related to the route (we came down from Waterton) but we have enjoyed the busy KOA here at St. Mary's. Nice staff, modern laundry and bathroom facilities, great gift shop with high quality items, hiking gear, some convenience foods, and Montana-made ice cream flavors scooped for cones. We ordered pizza one night, very good and delivered hot to our site. They'll begin offering the barbecue starting on this weekend.

It's a great location, very close to the visitor center. The jammer red bus tours pick up from the KOA office. A lot of fun, though today they couldn't go to all the way to Logan Pass because an avalanche was not yet cleared.

Only downside is the Wifi is weak and there's no cable TV or over-the-air antenna channels, but not a big deal. Very high wind all day here today, and blowing dust. The town itself ibetween here and the visitor center is small, just a couple of gas stations and hotels, so stock up before you come.
  • WARNING: West of Browning on Hwy2 is Highway 49 with a sign for ST. Mary DO NOT TAKE IT is NOT for RV's. Do not ask me how I know that.
    And times 2 on 464
