Hwy 2 in Maine

I planning my trip for this summer. During the trip I will be traveling from Montpelier, Vermont to Bangor, Maine and plan on using U.S.Hwy 2. Is this doable with a 33 foot class A motorhome towing a dingy? My main concern are low bridges.

I asked the same thing before our trip last September,(going opposite direction) & was told the same things, I'm glad we used Rt 2, nice road, beautiful scenery.

Drew, thanks for the tip about the Museum. I'll be staying at the RV park in Danville for a week while visiting my daughter. She lives in East Burke. I'll definitely visit the museum.

The Fairbanks Museum has just undergone a renovation that will make it even better! In Danville don't miss the Creamery and the Danville Inn for supper, and Sambel's Food Truck (suprisingly good prime rib and seafood) in West Danville where you can dine overlooking Joe's Pond. It's an easy ride to Montpelier and Barre - lots to do and see within 30 miles of Danville. And enjoy the view of the White Mountains from the Campground!
  • If you want a lovely area to visit on your way take RT 4 North from Farmington, Me which is also a nice little college town to Rangeley and Oquossoc, Me. We have a cabin on Rangeley Lake and try to get up there every other year. The area is beautiful and lots to do there.

  • I agree, it should not be problematic at all. Route 2 is a major east/west route through northern New England (and, reappearing after a span of exile in Canada, also the midwest and west).

The Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury, VT is an interesting stop for an afternoon. It's mostly a natural history museum, but has some quite eclectic other things as well. (That's Fairbanks as in Fairbanks scales, if you were wondering.) The nearby Athenaeum (public library) has a nice little art gallery, too, that's worth a visit.
  • Thanks everyone for your responses. I plan on making it a leisurely drive.
  • No problem for height. Don't be in a hurry. The small towns offer great home cooked food and the local farmers offer road side stands with the seasonal fruits and veggies. Stop and ask where the locals eat and you will be pleasantly surprised. Deep fried pickles, whoopee pie, or a Maine lobster roll is worth partaking of.

  • It's a pretty drive and we have done it a few times with our motorhome towing our car. No problem at all.
  • You will have no problems whatsoever! In the last few years they have re-done most of the route and for the most part it is a wide 2 lanes with wide shoulders the whole way.
  • No problem what-so-ever. We took the reverse of that route last summer with our 36 foot (12'-10" tall) fiver. It was a great route that was easy to drive and very scenic.
