Hwy 287 from Denver to Amarillo

Will be in Denver in two days heading South toward I20 then to Louisiana. Is 287 a good road with Diesel Stops along the way?

  • Plenty of places to buy fuel on 287....Hugo, CO Eads, CO Boise City, OK Stafford, TX Dumas, TX. When you get just north of Amarillo take the hwy 335 south/east bypass back to 287/I 40 if you want to avoid downtown Amarillo.

another way to miss Dallas is take US380 east at Denton TX. Then drop down on US69 at Greenville. That takes you to I-20. We like Coyote Ranch in Wichita Falls, Oasis RV park in Amarillo. In Longview TX we like Fernbrook RV Park.
In Shreveport, we go south on US49.
    Fuel stops:
    Pilot - Amarillo TX I-40 exit 75.
Pilot - Childress TX at US287 and US83.
Flying J - Wichita Falls TX.
    Pilot - Tyler TX I-20 exit 562.
    Flying J - Shreveport LA, I-20 exit 3.

There is way toooooo many traffic lights now between Denton and McKinney.great road but.
  • Just to say: US 280 from Greenville to Denton was our preferred route for many years, but the the traffic from the Metraplex (Dallas - Fort Worth) has expanded all that way north. Now there are traffic lights every few miles, and the traffic patterns are entirely urban.

Some years ago, we found that US 82 through Gainsville and Sherman to Paris, Texas is a much more pleasant drive.

We live just 20 miles north of Longview on US 259 and often make several RV trips a year to Colorado--or through Colorado to other destinations.

EDIT to add: There is another possible route which, we think, is better than the US 280 route. That is to take US 69 from Bells, Texas (just east of Sherman) all the way down to I-20. That certainly avoids the worst of the traffic I have mentioned above.

  • The above two posts give excellent suggestions. We follow these routes to Colorado. Great RV overnight at top of Raton Pass. Other good overnight stops at Goodlett, Texas; Vernon, Texas; and Wichita Falls--if one is coming on 287 from Amarillo.

For the scenery, I go south to Raton, NM then head east on 87/64. Hit the Cauplin volcano. Then Loves for gas in Clayton, NM, then Mc donalds in Dalhart, TX. (87 turn into 385 here). Then turn left at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, it's called Hwy 1061 this Dumps you into Amarillo.

X2 If you do take 287 start looking for fuel when you hit 1/2 tank fuel stops can be a long long long way between stations.

At Amarillo take 287 to SE of Wichita Falls TX pick up 82 to Texarkana before dropping down to I20 good road, shorter and you miss Dallas Fort Worth traffic plus you get to go to Paris.
