Hwy 37 - Stewart-Cassiar update

I just came up the highway the past couple of days, overnighting at Stewart. Contrary to what some people are still saying, the highway is all paved/chipsealed except about a half-mile at the hairpin on the south side of the Stikine River. It's generally in good to very condition condition with the exception of the Iskut to Dease Lake section and a few km just south of the Alaska Hwy, which have always been rough and are no worse this year. Construction is almost finished on the Cranberry Junction to Bob Quinn Lake powerline (just stringing the final lines at the south end with helicopters) but tower installation is just starting on the Iskut extension - see the photo of that section. There are several mines hauling in the Stewart area this year, so with the powerline crews and the usual logging, there's a fair bit of traffic (by Hwy 37 standards :) ). The snow is staying longer than expected, so not much is open yet, and I hit some snow falling at Gnat Pass and some wet snow along Dease Lake, but not enough to be a problem with the U-Haul truck I was driving (helping a friend move to Whitehorse).

  • The Cassier is a gorgeous highway and is wide enough for two vehicles. No drop offs. Everyone should treat themselves to the drive.
  • Thanks, that's what I was hoping for. Sue as always you pics are amazing!
  • Sorry to hear about Dease River RV Park closing. We stopped there there in Aug year before last (2012). No one in the office. A few workers were working on one of the wooden buildings. Found a camp with electric hookup and spent a pleasant evening. Checked office again the next morning; still nobody there. Left a phone number but never heard anything back.
  • The north end of the Cassiar looks more like this

Or this if you're travelling in September

  • No, the width varies a lot - this section is signed as being "narrow and winding" (ya think? :) ). There are no really steep/deep drops without guardrails, that I can think of.
  • Is that the width of the road, the Cassiar, all the way? I've heard people talking about stretches where there is no shoulder and a drop off to the center of the Earth! This looks awesome!
  • The saddest sight along the highway was certainly the single word scrawled on a sheet of plywood blocking the entrance to the beautiful campground on the Dease River - "BANKRUPT". :(
