HWY 395 California

Is Hwy 395 California Northbound difficult (Steep) to take with a 30' 5W?
Thanks
  • I love Hwy. 395 from North to South, The Eastern Sierra, my favorite camping area in California. Have a great trip.

    Bob in Calif.
  • For the most part beautiful and nice to drive. Especially after you've passed the 14 connection NB. Probably my favorite road in CA to drive. I'm less thrilled with the section in San Bernardino County. Not steepness-it for some reason attracts some very poor drivers with risky passing attempts. And a month ago there was some construction NB 2 lane section out of Adelanto with K railed right lane (not hint of shoulder) and lot of heavy truck traffic opposite. The crosswinds on this section can be notable too.

We just came down it again - got home mid last week. This is our third or fourth time down it from north to south from the OR Coast to Kramers Corner near Boron.

    It is not an issue.

Yes, some grades but nothing serious. And they have really, really improved the road! Much of it is now 4 lane.

If going south to north I would recommend Boulder Creek in Lone Pine, Mona Vista in Lee Vining, and Likely RV Park in Likely.

Do you have time to stop and see things? If so, I have some recommendations I could post.

Yes I do have time and sure would like to make some stops especially next to natural hot springs and to take a soak, please do post your recommendation.
    Thanks
  • Don't have a lot but ...........

Bodie. Maybe the finest ghost town in the U S. Now a state park. Huge. If you stay at Lee Vining it is about15 miles north on the 395 and about 12 miles in with your tow vehicle. The last 3 miles in are pretty rough road but certainly doable.

Drive up Tioga Pass into Yosemite out of Lee Vining for as far as you want and come back. Some nice hiking of various levels up there as well. Also just TV.

Death Valley - again just TV - out of Lone Pine. Do side trip of that route to town of Darwin (very interesting town of 50) and suggest you spend most of your time in your vehicle; not sure how welcome visitors are. I have always felt safe though; but use caution and respect.

Also out of Lone Pine. Drive up to Mt. Whitney trailhead area. Hike part of it if you like. We went up to Lone Pine Lake which is about 6 miles rt. Good trail but average grade is 12.7% and you go from about 8700 to over 10000 feet.

Lone Pine - drive around the Alabama Hills; see the motion picture museum if you like (we have not).

General Store in Likely. Make sure you go into the basement area for things to see. RV park there is great for overnight.

If you PM me with your email address I will send you my emails I sent out to my Photo Group with pix of those things.
  • Check out Buckeye Hot Springs near Bridgeport. Watch out, though -- some folks treat it as clothing optional.
