Hwy 395 the length of California

I was in Yosemite a few years ago up on Tioga Pass having lunch and a couple from Germany with their kids came and sat at the other end of the table. We got to talking and they were on their first trip to the States. They were staying that night in Yosemite and then the next day they were going to head down to 395 and make their way to Las Vegas. They were so funny because they thought they were going to have to find a store to buy gas cans and water cans so they could make it all the way through the desert. They were very relieved when I told them none of that was necessary. I had them get their map out and showed them all the towns and places to see. They had been told that the Mojave Desert was just a barren wasteland. I think they had watched too many John Wayne movies!

and are there RV parks along the route say every 250 miles or so. We don't use the State of Federal Parks, just RV parks. Not that we have anything against them, we just haven't ever used them (usually no water and we don't carry water in our Fresh Water tank other than to flush and wash hands)

There are way more RV parks than every 250 miles. Some are off the highway by a mile or two, but there are all kinds of parks along 395.

Since I'm writing this from a 10/10 resort in Sparks, Nevada, getting ready to head to Bishop tomorrow, I can say that there are some great parks we've looked at in this general area. I use rvparkreviews. It hasn't led me astray yet! Though I have done the entire length, it's been decades. We were going to stop at Lee Vining, but predicted night time temps in the mid 20's are a little more than I'm used to. 395 between So Cal and Mammoth is beyond popular. Gas won't be a problem. We use Costco. The one in Carson City is right on the road. Pretty good RV park right next to it. I'm always very carful about wind. It can be very strong coming off the Eastern Sierra at times. So far, road conditions are a whole lot better than those in the Central Valley of California.

I thought I had posted on this but guess not.

We love the 395. Have driven it several times both ways between just west of Barstow (Hwy 58 junction) to Alturas where we pick up Hwy 139.

In fact, God willing, we will be doing it again next year.

Going north I would recommend Boulder Creek in Lone Pine (lots to see including Mt Whitney, west entrance to Death Valley w/o rv, Alabama Hills, etc), Mona Vista in Lee Vining (can access Yosemite from the east there and get to Bodie State Park for sure and get fuel anyplace other than Lee Vining unless things have changed)and Likely RV Park (nice, small place with golf course if you like and the General Store in L V is amazing - get downstairs to see things as well and their fuel was cheaper there than in Alturas the last time we were thru.

Road is good two lane with passing lanes in many areas as needed. Plenty of fuel stops as well.

Gas is probably 50 miles at the worst scenario as there are several small towns along the way. Rv parks also available. Remember part of this 395 trip is in Nv.
