California Hwy 128

Planning a trip to the coast - Fort Bragg. Took hwy from Willits a few years ago...very windy. Looks to me like the better route is from
Cloverdale. Driving a 38' MH with toad. Suggestions please.

We have used CA 20 straight west from Willits.

I recently drove it in my toad - no way I would drive it in the MH,
this is from a guy who had driven motor homes 47,000 miles in the past 6 years and I am not chicken

We stayed at the KOA in Willits and drove to the coast

Note per the California highway dept Buses and motorhomes
over 40 feet prohibited on RT 20 and Rt 120

  • Update...probably will stay in Mendocino. So again, the real question is Hwy 128 from Cloverdale looks pretty easy as I travel it with Google Earth. Looking for information if I am correct. Thanks
  • You will have no issues traveling Hwy 128. We visit Fort Bragg 2 to 3 times a year and have used both routes (20 and 128) in a 40' dp towing a Ford Edge. We always stay at Pomo rv park just south of Fort Bragg, so hwy 20 is a more direct route for us. The last couple of miles from the Navarro river where 128 meets hwy 1 up to Mendocino is very steep and curvy. Just take it slow and you'll be fine. Where are you staying in Mendocino?

We will be at the Pomo Rv park in a few weeks. I asked a similar question, 20 vs 128, a few weeks ago. Ive driven 20. That has got to be the curviest road in America. I'm planning on taking 128 this time.

Yeah, hwy 20 can be a workout. As I posted, we have used both routes and they're pretty equal in terms of curves and slow going. Hwy 128 is real curvy at the beginning off hwy 101 and then smooths out as you travel through the Anderson Valley. It gets pretty winding again when you enter the redwood section along the river and on up the hill towards Mendocino. The hwy 128 route is more scenic, especially through the orchards and wineries near Boonville. We will be at Pomo in early October on our return trip from the Oregon coast. Enjoy!
  • Haven't decided on where we will stay....have stayed at Pomo in Fort Bragg and love that campground.
  • Earlier this year we were staying at Dutcher Creek RV in Cloverdale with plans to head to Pomo RV. Did a day trip up to Ukiah then to Medocino via a road we accidentally stumbled upon in the late '70's' when it wasn't even paved. Came back via 128. I keep a journal of all such travels for future reference. My notation was that 128 was not an RV route I would be comfortable with in our current rig. I've done 20 with a 32' Class A towing a Grand Cherokee. Wouldn't hesitate in our current 37'er.
