HWY 54 between Zacatecas & Guadalajara

Any information on the HWY 54 between Zacatecas & Guadalajara? We came up from Malaque going to Nuevo Laredo. At Guadalajara we went on what we thought was going to be toll roads through Aguascalientes to Zacatecas. Many sections of that road were bad. Years ago we went from Guadalajara to Zacatecas on HWY 54. That was a good road and no cities to go through.
