This is one of those roads that gets discussed quite often. I travel it yearly, summer and winter. Last winter, we travelled it in the dark during a snowstorm right before they closed the road for three days. We couldn't see the edge so there was nothing to fear. We took our half out of the middle as the only other vehicles we saw were snowplows with lots of flashing lights. :E
If you are comfortable with handling your rig on curvy mountain roads, it isn't a problem. Although at your length, you might be better off disconnecting the jeep and driving it separately. Click on this link to see the kind of situation you might find yourself in:
Google Street View, Million Dollar Highway above Ouray
This is the kind of driving you must be comfortable with.
Ken, If you look at the Semi and the RV in the Picture - It's the Semi Over the double yellow line - so yes it is close and can be stressful - But if you watch the U Tube video later in the thread there are really very few cars on the Road, until you get close to Ouray.
So as I hope the OP understands - only he/she can decide - Options are available and they will also provide a Beautiful drive - Hopefully they take the trip first in the Toad and have a better appreciation for the drive, then decide.
Last, the San Juan's are just a Special Treat - the most important thing, IMHO is to see the Mountains - Take the time to SEE this area, it is changing and will never be the same in 10+ years (JMHO) Drive on the roads, all the roads in the Toad first, then you can decide if you are one who says GO or one who says NO.
Be Smart, Be Safe, Be comfortable with your Decision.
The San Juan's are truly a Wonderland.
