Hwy 70 through Utah

We are interested in traveling Hwy 70 through Utah and wanted to see if other's have traveled that route and could provide some feedback re: the roads. We will be traveling in a class A 35 ft DP with a toad. Any concerns we should know about? Thanks.

  • Like others have said, that is the fast way to get through Utah, not the scenic or interesting way. You will be missing out on a lot of wow factor.

Between Salina and Green River (107 miles) there are zero services. Nothing. Some turnouts/rest areas, but no services.

Well, it would be a shame to stay on that interstate across Utah. There is so much to see in Utah, especially south of the interstate - many awesome national parks. I would recommend you don't drive the interstate although it's a good road as interstates go but you'd be missing a lot.

    Good road but I think about punching these locations into your GPS;

    Zion
    Arches
    Rt 12
    Escalante
    Kodachrome
    Capital Reef
    Goblins SP
    Canyonlands
    Arches
    Moab
    Rt 128
    then into Colorado on I-70

With your Coach and Toad (Jeep?) you will be exposed to so much more than you would see on the interstate, still you will need a good deal of time as all these locations can require a week to really see and touch the beauty. Try to schedule the time when the heat is not extreme and enjoy the drive. as most of these roads are excellant.

Google the tunnel in Zion to learn about it, once you pass through it the landscape changes and you, will be rewarded with eye candy around almost every turn.

    JMHO,

    BOL,

We could do a whole lot more in Colorado but that is for another day,
  • If you have to stay on the interstate, you won't have a problem but you will be missing some of the most gorgeous country in the US along with several Nat Parks!

I-15 to UT 20 to UT 12 takes you right by Bryce & north to Capitol Reef then UT 24 to I-70. Breathtaking country and worth a drive through even if you don't get to see the parks.

From St George, Utah to Colorado Springs.

    What time of year?

If Colorado Springs is your destination, then I-70 through Colorado is certainly not the way to go, either now through April or later in the year.

First, if it's any time soon, March and April are the snowiest months here in Colorado, so be prepared for a lot of winter driving and/or I-70 being closed in spots. There's also a lot of traffic to contend with, the ski traffic now until resort closings, and the weekend warrior traffic during the warmer months.

Second, there are better ways to get there; from Grand Junction, take US 50 eastbound through Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Salida and on to Pueblo and then go north on I-25. Much more enjoyable drive, only one pass to go over (Monarch Pass -- a relatively easy pass), good roadway, and much more direct to the Springs.
  • There are a couple of steep grades with curves in the western part of Utah on I-70. They are well marked and have brake check pullouts near the top. Just pay attention to your speed and you will be fine. If you need to use your brakes push down hard for a short time then let up, and repeat if necessary.
  • Typical Interstate quality. There are grades, but nothing time and safe speed can't handle. I wouldn't do it till after the Spring thaw.
