Hwy16 Camping on Long Weekend

If you get in there on the Thursday, I should think you`ll be fine. Early bird vs the worm. There is a Prov Campground on Fraser lake too, eh...Beaumont. But..you pay for that one. That park accepts reservations too...just an FYI.

Also...Peterson Beach Rec Site on the back side Fraser Lake. Was there last night. Easiest access from the west end.

Hey Gary, we must do the same thing! We've overnighted at Painted Chasm, fantastic scenery!. Also spent a lot of time at Greeny lake.......good fishing! Haven't tried the back of the info place in 100 mile house, but i know where you mean. That's a good possibility. Thanks

Lac La Hache..just as you come into town there is a turn to the right...to Greenly Lake, home of the Woman Eating River Otter...and a BC Campground.

Just after Clinton..maybe 20ks? is Chasam..a BC scenic spot that you can over-night at.

In 100 Mile House..turn left at the BC Info building, drive past..to the nice green space, lake and log on your left, at the airport area.


I'm on my way home and will offer up more once there. I'll sorta keep my eyes peeled as I pass by Fort Fraser, etc.

This is great! Oh, how I long to return to Canada and Alaska and drive Hwy 16 or 97. Even during busy holiday periods! But, our daughter and her family just moved to Torrance, California, just outside of Los Angeles. There are campgrounds in the area; nice ones! But the only time that your can move around on the freeways and local streets without being in rush hour is between 10am and 2 pm or at night! What a pain.

For us, the stress-release happened as we turned up the Cassiar Highway. Hwy 16 was still too busy! But it's your past-home area so you likely have a different perspective.

I think our trip is going to be something like this........ First day (Thursday)up to somewhere between Lac la Hache & Billy's Puddle (that's bc talk!). Second day (Friday), somewhere around Fraser Lake, then we'll try for Red Bluffs on the Saturday until Monday. I think my main thrust is to just get around PG as soon as possible! Then the air (tension?)becomes so much better (Forest Fires notwithstanding!) After that, we'll just unwind & poke along, enjoying the sights & smells of Mother Nature, so who knows where we will be? Gary...you are right, in that with the long weekend, it is going to be busy for traffic. Are you set on using a campground? Because if not..just go until you are done for the day and then look around. I drive 16 often and finding a place to sleep is never a problem. Having said that...I don't ever use campgrounds anyway. Every single city, town, district on 16 has commercial spots and I can't imagine you'll have a problem. Most folks on Labour Day weekend are home or in PG shopping for school stuff.

Burns Lake has a community CG, as does Smithers and Kitwanga...just for starters.

We were sometimes driving 97 & 16 on long weekends.

The provincial campground at Lac La Hache always had spots, even later in the evening. That was usually our first stop when driving north from Vancouver Island. Even on a long weekend, it had some spots left over.

If you feel like doing more time on that day, you could try for Ten Mile Lake provincial park campground (still on Hwy 97) BUT it is a popular spot on weekends. There is a bit of an overflow camping area, but I expect on a long weekend it would be busy too. We often stopped at the day-use area for lunch.

Beaumont provincial park campground on Hwy 16 was full the two times we tried to stay there on long weekends. It is a bit busier because it is lakeside. We did find spots at Peterson's Beach rec site on the north side of the lake though. It is rustic but do-able. Sites are smallish and rough though.

Tyhee Lake provincial park near Smithers is busy on long weekends. Popular spot. It is large though. Takes reservations too but might have a minimum stay because it is a long weekend.

Red Bluff provincial park campground, near Topley & Granisle was a real nice stay. Bit of a drive in but not too far. We were the only ones there!

Seeley Lake, between Kitwanga and New Hazelton is very close to the highway and often busy. It's a small campground. Never stayed there because it was always full.

Once stayed at Dave's RV Park in Vanderhoof. Very nice spot. Well-maintained. About a kilometre off the highway.

Now that we live in Yukon, no worries about camping along Hwy 97 & 16!
