I-20 to South Carolina

Can anyone tell me how the I-20 route through Atlanta is, looking to leave Birmingham and go towards Charleston SC and saw I-20 goes through the heart of Atlanta, any problem towing a 5th wheel through there?

  • I agree with the above posts. About three weeks ago I was able to stay in lane #4 (counting from inside) all the way through Atlanta - no lane changes at all (coming West) until I got to the BHam exit. Sometimes #4 was the extreme right lane, sometimes it was in the middle. Just stayed with it. HOV=#1-lane#2-lane#3-lane#4-exit lane (sometimes).
  • You definitely want to go through I20 and not i285. I20 still has 12 foot lanes during an expansion in the early 90s I285 was reduced to 10 foot lanes for much of the roadway.

Avoid 6 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 7 PM on the weekdays and 6 AM to 6 PM on Friday.
  • I have discovered lane position and time of day are the two keys for getting through Atlanta with your sanity in tact.
  • Just did it a week ago towing my 37' 5ver. Went right through and had no problems. It was about 11:00 AM.
  • Going thru Atlanta isn't any fun, but I'd rather go thru it E-W than N-S.

the thought is worst than the trip,really....and I almost think it is better during rush hours.....it keeps the "race car drivers" slowed down and less chance they weave in and out of the lanes........now, I don't look for reasons to go thru Atlanta...but if I have to..i will...Chuck
  • don't let anyone convince you to take I285 around instead of going through. I285 is much much worse.. avoid weekdays between 6am and 10am and then again from about 3 or 4 PM until about 7 PM... Semi's can only take 285 unless they have a destination inside perimeter and think they rule 285..
  • went thru during rush hour omg needed 2 drinks. Coming back missed rush hour no problem
  • Easy route with no problems. I make that run a couple of times a year from Birmingham to Myrtle Beach.....good luck
