I-49 South through Arkansas

Anyone travel south on I-49 all the way through Arkansas? We will be towing the 5er from KC to Texarkana then on to Cagun Palms RV park in Louisiana. How much of I-49 is completed? Any other recommendations on a route? Thanks, John
  • Second on dbbls route. US 259 connects with I-30 (in Texas) which takes you into Texarkana. There are a few sharp curves and steep grades on that route through eastern Oklahoma, but not so many as on US 71 in Arkansas. There are several Oklahoma state parks if you want to camp along the way.

Check out Heavever Runestone State Park south of Poutear, OK. Was the large standing stone carved by Vikings a thousand years ago?
  • I-49 designation ends about 10 or 15 miles north of the Arkansas border. It remains US 71 until south of Bella Vista, then it becomes I-540 until just past Fort Smith. This is where I turn off and go over into Oklahoma and continue south on 59/259 but I am heading to Houston instead of Louisiana.

You have no interstate from Mena south to Texarkana. Just good old 2 lane US 71, four lane for some sections.

The east bypass around Texarkana is open from just past the Red River completely around the city.

Is 49 open down to 220, or does it end at LA1?
I-49 ends at Hwy 1. It just opened a month or so ago but only goes about 19 miles north. When the striping is completed it will be opened all the way to Arkansas. It will be several years before it is opened all the way to I-220.
